Common Problems With Isuzu D'max

If you’re in the market for a ute, the Dmax is a popular choice for those who need a safe, dependable car that does its job. That said, every vehicle has particular issues that commonly crop up, so it's good to do your research if you’re looking to buy a new Dmax. Let’s take a closer look at some common problems with the Isuzu Dmax.

What are common Isuzu D'max problems?

Whether you’re looking for the top of the range luxury features or the simple reliability of a ute that does the job every time, the Dmax has a style to suit everyone. The 2022 offering from Isuzu comes in 2WD and 4WD models and has a huge range of body and tray styles, spoiling you for choice.

That said, there are a few things that you need to pay special attention to when you’re deciding whether or not to purchase a Dmax. To help you make an informed choice, let’s look at potential problems you can encounter across the Dmax range.

How to spot Isuzu Dmax automatic transmission problems

Dmax’s can heat up while performing tasks like towing heavy loads up winding roads. This heat transfers to the radiator coolant, causing the engine to heat up, which isn’t great news for your automatic transmission.

Although improvements have been made on the latest models, it’s always a good idea to be cautious when it comes to automatic transmissions. Check the transmission fluid regularly, and if you notice it’s dark or smells bad, don’t hesitate to bring it in for an inspection.

Bullbars, winches and spotlights are considered all part of your towing load, so make sure you keep this in mind when loading up your vehicle with modifications.

Possible Isuzu Dmax gearbox problems

The new Dmax models have a 6-speed gearbox, which is up on the older 5-speed offering. The extra gear improves its towing capacity and fuel economy, making it a welcome addition.

If you have a manual Dmax and are having issues with your gearbox, you might notice a few different symptoms, like difficulty changing gears, a whining or clunking noise, or even a burning smell. Make sure you bring it in to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem to avoid any issues getting worse.

A breakdown of Isuzu Dmax engine problems

The Dmax comes with a 1.9L or 3.0L turbo-diesel engine, making it ideal for long-drives or offroad adventures. If you’re a stop-start city driver, on the other hand, it’s known to have issues with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valves (EGR). You’ll need to try and get your Dmax up to highway speeds to help avoid soot and oil build-up, which can lead to a clogged valve.

Although this is a problem with any diesel engine driven in these environments, the fact that diesel is the only option you have with the Dmax means that this issue is something worth considering. If you do go this way and practice mainly city driving you’ll need to have it cleaned at every service to avoid issues and expensive repairs down the track.

Getting to the bottom of Isuzu Dmax injector problems

The Isuzu Dmax has a diesel common rail engine setup and can be prone to damage over time. This can often be caused by contaminated fuel or dirt that’s clogging up the injectors, causing them to not fire correctly.

If you see black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe, your car isn’t starting or suffers from power loss, bring it in to be serviced right away.

Isuzu Dmax rear diff problems to consider

One major issue in older Isuzu Dmax models was that they didn’t have rear diff locks. This can make handling off-road situations tricky, and can be a drawback for those who love hitting off road tracks. Newer models now have rear diff locks as a standard on all 4WDs, allowing for better traction and greater choice when it comes to choosing tracks. The locking rear diff does have one issue though. The actuator on the rear differential is exposed, leaving it open to damage from rocks and debris, especially in off-road situations. This isn’t a huge deal-breaker, with aftermarket solutions you can bolt on to protect the actuator and avoid expensive repairs.

At the end of the day, whether you choose a Dmax or another vehicle is entirely up to you, based on what you need and want out of a ute. Of course when looking at the Dmax, problems are there, but you’ll find this with any vehicle if you look hard enough and it really is a popular choice for reliability and safety.
