Warranties offered by the car manufacturers

There are two main types of new car warranties. A car manufacturer may offer warranties against defects, commonly called a manufacturer's warranty and can also be referred to as a statutory warranty.

The manufacturer’s warranty may set out requirements that consumers must comply with. For example, it may require the consumer to ensure any car servicing is carried out:

  • by qualified staff
  • according to the manufacturer’s specification
  • using appropriate quality parts where required.

Warranties offered by dealers

The second type of warranty is called an extended warranty, dealers sometimes offer their own extended warranties on new cars. These usually commence at the completion of the manufacturer’s warranty.

A common requirement for an extended dealers warranty is that the car be serviced by the dealer offering the warranty. If this is a requirement of a dealer’s extended warranty, then an independent repairer, will void the warranty if they service the car under this extended warranty.
