Frequently Asked Questions about Mechanic Apprenticeships

How often does mycar advertise for apprenticeship vacancies? ​

Subject to demand, apprentice recruitment may occur once or twice during the first and/or third quarter of the year. Applications for apprenticeships must be made online and will only be accepted during the advertising period. To avoid missing opportunities, we recommend setting up a Job Alert.​

What is the typical recruitment timeline?​

The recruitment process can take anything up to 4 weeks from the time you apply. ​

How long is the apprenticeship? ​​

Apprenticeships are over a 4-year period, comprising of both on-the-job and off-the-job training. You must be prepared to enter into and complete a full 4-year apprenticeship.​

What would my working hours be?​

Apprentices are required to work a 36-hour week, comprising of 8-hour. Working hours may be altered in line with operational requirements and our Enterprise Agreement. Working days are generally between the hours of 7 am to 4 pm (as a guide). ​

What would I wear?​

You will be issued with a uniform from mycar which includes a mycar polo, mycar trousers & mycar shorts. You will also be supplied with the relevant PPE. ​

Can I received RPL or credits if I have already completed the Cert II?​​

If you can show us where you have that an apprentice has satisfied specific competencies in previous study or work experience, it may be possible to have the achievement of competency recognised by applying for recognition of prior learning (RPL). However, the decision to recognise RPL will be solely based on the evidence presented and recognition will be at the discretion of the relevant Registered Training Organisation (RTO).​

Do you need a driver's licence to be able to start an Apprenticeship?​​

Although parents can be super supportive, the automotive industry sometimes requires a lot of flexibility in terms of moving cars around the workshop. We strongly advise that you have your licence (or are near too getting it) to be able to effectively do your role.​

How much does it cost to do an Apprenticeship?​

Nothing! You are paid to work and learn at trade school.​

Do you accept applicants' part-way through a current apprenticeship? ​

mycar has previously taken on apprentices who’ve already commenced an apprenticeship. However please be aware that for us to take you on you will need to have proof of your terminated Contract of Training before we can consider you. ​

What are the essential criteria I must meet to apply?​

  • You must be an Australian Citizen or permanent Australian resident​.
  • Hold a current and valid driver’s license (either full, learners, probationary) ​

Can I get an apprenticeship without experience?​

Most apprenticeships and do not require you to have work experience as an Automotive Technician. Australian Apprenticeships are designed for beginners in that way. However, you may have other work and life experiences that are relevant to our trade. This could be from the subjects you studied at school, both paid and voluntary work experience, activities you participate in like team sport, and especially the interest and commitment you have for automotive.​

Am I qualified when I finish my apprenticeship?​

Yes. An Australian Apprenticeship involves gaining practical, hands-on work experience and completing a nationally accredited qualification in the trade of your choosing.
