Pre-purchase Inspection FAQs

A petrol car pre-purchase inspection evaluates the vehicle’s mechanical condition, safety and overall quality before you commit to buying it. It typically covers the engine, transmission, cooling system, brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, bodywork, interior and electrical systems. A road test and diagnostic scan may also be completed, followed by a report outlining faults and recommended repairs.

A pre-purchase inspection can identify many common engine and transmission problems, including fluid leaks, unusual noises, smoke, warning lights, overheating and rough or delayed gear changes. A diagnostic scan may reveal additional fault codes. However, an inspection is not the same as dismantling the engine or gearbox, so intermittent or concealed internal problems may not always be detectable.

The inspector will look for visible signs of accident damage, corrosion and previous repairs. These can include uneven panel gaps, overspray, mismatched paint, welding marks, distorted structural areas and water leaks. While a thorough visual inspection can uncover many concerns, it cannot guarantee that every concealed repair or issue beneath trim, paint or body panels will be found.

Available service records and logbooks can be reviewed for maintenance gaps, inconsistent odometer readings and evidence that scheduled servicing has been completed. However, an inspection does not independently guarantee that the documents or recorded kilometres are genuine. Buyers should also complete a PPSR search to check for finance owing, a written-off status or a stolen-vehicle record.

The time required depends on the vehicle and inspection package, but a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection generally takes around one to two hours. Mobile inspections can often be completed at a dealership, private residence or other agreed location, provided the inspector has permission, safe access to the vehicle and suitable conditions for inspecting and road-testing it.

Yes. A pre-purchase inspection provides an independent assessment whether you are buying from a dealership or private seller. It can reveal mechanical faults, safety concerns, accident damage and upcoming maintenance costs that may not be obvious during a short test drive. The report can help you make an informed decision, negotiate the price or walk away from a problematic vehicle.

If the vehicle is sold before the inspection takes place, please contact us as soon as possible and we can transfer the inspection to another vehicle.
