What are run flat tyres?

Run flat tyres are exactly as their name suggests: they continue to run even when flat. They’re designed to keep all parts of the car tyre secure in the case of a puncture or loss of pressure. Run flat tyres offer peace of mind on a weekend camping trip or while travelling on a busy highway that you can keep driving (with some distance limitations) to get to a safe location and replace the flat.

How do run flat tyres work?

Unlike regular tyres that use air to hold up your car, the sidewalls of run flat tyres are reinforced with rubber inserts. With these reinforced sides, the tyres carry the weight of the car in the case of a flat and prevent the rim of the wheel from touching the road.

Run flat tyres will effectively continue to work at speeds of up to 80km p/h, giving you enough time to stop safely and replace the flat or get to your closest mycar mechanic.

Can run flat tyres be repaired?

The short answer to this is no; in most cases, tyre manufacturers will not repair run flats. However, different brands have their own guidelines depending on the make, model and severity of tyre damage.

Breaking down run flat tyres advantages and disadvantages

Run flat tyres may sound like the perfect way to avoid getting stranded on the side of the road. While they have their advantages, run flat tyres aren’t yet a perfect technology and come with some trade-offs.

The main advantage of run flat tyres is that they keep you driving so you can change the tyre in a safe location. In the case that you cannot change the flat, they also give you the time to get to a service location to have the tyre changed for you.

What about disadvantages? Run flat tyres are popular in Europe, and many Australians believe that due to the shorter distances between European towns, that’s where they’re best suited. Some people also find that run flat tyres create an uncomfortable and bumpy ride due to the reinforced sidewall. Regular tyre prices are also cheaper than run flat tyre prices, and the grip of regular tyres is also considered to be better all around. Run flat tyres may also be a little heavier, decreasing fuel economy and increasing your trips to the bowser. However, this is offset by not having to carry a spare tyre!

How much are run flat tyres?

Typically, a run flat tyre price is a little more expensive than regular tyres. However, run flat tyre prices will vary depending on the size, model and make, so it’s best to get a quote for your particular car.

At mycar, our run flat tyre price includes tyre fitting, environmentally friendly old tyre disposal, a mycar price guarantee and Fly Buys points. Selected run flat tyres also qualify for the mycar Tyre Care Plan.

Is it easy to switch to run flat tyres?

In short, yes, it is possible to switch. If your car wasn’t designed with run flat tyres, it may take some adjusting including modifications to the suspension. Cars with run flat tyres should also have a tyre pressure monitoring system (TMPS). The TMPS will alert the driver when a puncture has occurred, so you know when the tyre needs replacing.

If you’re planning on switching, it’s best to get in touch with one of our experienced technicians who can give you advice for your car.
