What causes drive shaft damage?

Drive shaft damage can be caused by wear-and-tear over time, using low-quality grease in the drive shaft, and in some cases, damage can occur due to improper installation. There are four main signs of drive shaft damage to look out for:

1. Intense vibrations from under the car: this is caused by the joints and bearings attached to the drive shaft wearing out.

2. Abnormal noises: these come from under the car and can include clunking, scraping, rattling or squeaking. These noises are usually attributed to worn outer joints, however squeaking could be a sign that a joint simply needs lubricating, rather than actual replacement.

3. Difficulty turning: a damaged drive shaft can prevent your car’s wheels from turning properly, which can make controlling your car difficult.

4. Shuddering when accelerating: if you notice that your car is shuddering when accelerating, specifically from a stop or at low speed, this could be a sign of drive shaft damage – specifically a loose joint or bad carrier bearing (the carrier bearing helps absorb vibration).

If you are noticing any of these signs, it is definitely time to get your drive shaft checked out by one of our mycar experts.

How much does drive shaft replacement cost?

Once you figure out that your drive shaft needs replacing, the first question you will have is how much does it cost?

The cost of a drive shaft replacement can vary depending on the vehicle (brand, model and make), mechanic and taxes. Drive shaft replacement prices can vary from as low as $200 to as high as $2,000.

You can have a discussion with your mycar mechanic to find out more about drive shaft replacement costs for your car - sometimes a drive shaft repair is possible instead.

How long should a drive shaft last?

Drive shafts do not have a set lifespan, but there are certain factors that can affect how long it lasts. The lifespan of a driveshaft can vary based on the vehicle type, wear-and-tear, and any modifications made to it and the car. As a general rule, a drive shaft should be able to last at least 75,000 miles (approx. 120,000km).

If you take good care of your car and have it serviced regularly, the drive shaft should last as long as the car itself. If you want to know how your drive shaft is looking, bring your car in to your local mycar mechanic.

Can you drive with a Damaged drive shaft?

Yes you can still drive with a Damaged drive shaft, however it is not recommended that you do so for long, due to the safety issues. A Damaged drive shaft can snap and get wedged between your car and the ground, which can impact on forward movement, cause further damage to your car, and be a hazard for the drivers behind you.

If you discover your drive shaft is broken, contact your mycar mechanic as soon as possible to have it replaced.

Can you replace a drive shaft yourself?

While you can replace a drive shaft yourself if you have the technical know-how and tools, it’s a job that is best left up to the experts. Simply call the team at mycar and we can talk you through the replacement process and have your ride back on the road in no time.
