Lights and reflectors

Last updated 24/01/2020

A broken bumper light leaves your vehicle at increased likelihood of collision. Next to your brakes, your headlights are one of the most important safety features on your car. When choosing a bumper light, you should look for a high-quality light that can be fitted easily and is resistant to corrosion.

See and be seen

When driving at night, or when there is insufficient daylight to make seeing a person in dark clothes difficult at a distance of 100 metres, a driver must have clearly visible:

  • Headlights
  • Tail lights
  • Parking or indicator lights
  • Number plate lights
  • Clearance lights

It’s also important to prevent glare and ensure that your lights (other than high beams) are adjusted to avoid dazzling the driver of another vehicle.

How strong are your headlights?

Obviously, there are various choices available when it comes to headlights depending on the make and model of your car, but whether you opt for halogen or xenon, you must ensure that:

  • Low-beam lights illuminate the road ahead for at least 25 metres
  • High-beam lights illuminate the road ahead for at least 50 metres

Daytime running lights, if fitted, often have wattage limitations, there are several rules that apply specially to fog lights, and your car may be fitted with interior lights to illuminate the inside of your vehicle.

Colour coding

Each reflector has a different job to do, and a different colour:

  • Reflectors at the front of the car must be yellow or white
  • Reflectors at the rear of your car must be yellow or red
  • Reflectors on the central part of your car must be yellow
