What tyres fit my car? A car tyre size guide

When it comes to car tyres, there’s so many to choose from that it can be hard to know where to start. What do all the numbers mean? How do you know which is best for your car? From different brands to sizes, there’s a few things to consider about your new set of wheels.

We’ve put it all together right here, so if you’d like to know how to work out tyre size, and what size fits your car, read on!

How to check tyre size

Different cars have different wheel sizes, which means not every tyre will fit your car. When it comes to tyre shopping, you’ll need to know the correct size. If you look at the current tyres on your car, the side wall will tell you all you need to know about them, including their size. Here’s an example of what you’ll see printed on your tyre and an explanation of what it all means:

Example Tyre Numbers: 215 / 60 R 16 95 V

  • The number 215 in our example is the width in millimetres of the tyre, from the inner wall to the outer wall.
  • The second number is the aspect ratio, or the height of the tyre as a percentage of the width, which in this example is 60%.
  • The letter that comes next refers to the design of the tyre material, which in this case is ‘radial’. This has become the standard for pretty much every car tyre today.
  • The next number is the diameter of the wheel rim in inches that fits the tyre - 16 inches in our example.
  • The last number is the load index, or the maximum weight that the tyre can safely take in kilograms. You need to make sure this is equal or higher than the load rating for your car, as it’s illegal (and unsafe!) to have tyres that don’t meet this requirement. In this case the number is 95, which is a load of 690 kg.
  • The final letter is a symbol for the maximum safe speed that the tyres can run at. In this case it’s V, which is 240 km/hour.
