How to tell if you need power steering rack reconditioning

If you notice a pulling sensation while steering, the car rattling or shaking, or a stiff wheel, you may need your power steering rack reconditioned or replaced.

Power steering rack reconditioning involves removing the part before stripping it down and giving it a good clean. Each component will be carefully checked and any faulty or broken parts will be replaced. Once we’re done, we’ll rebuild the rack, give it a thorough test and reinstall it. This process can take several hours, depending on how many components need replacing.

What’s involved in a power steering rack replacement?

If we’re not able to save your existing steering rack, our mechanics can swap it out for a new one instead. We will:

  • Hoist your car up to remove the wheels;
  • disconnect the outer tie rods from the steering knuckles on each side;
  • disconnect the power steering hoses from the steering rack and undo the mounting bolts;
  • disconnect and replace the steering shaft from the power steering rack.

Once it’s been refitted and everything has been reconnected or reattached, we’ll align the wheels and take your car for a test ride. Replacing a steering rack can take anywhere from four to six hours, depending on the complexity of the job.

How much does a power steering rack replacement cost?

On average, a new power steering rack is priced from $750 to $1500. We’ll always provide you with a detailed quote before we get started. At mycar, we understand flexible payment options are important. That’s why we offer Zip Pay and Afterpay to split your bill into payments so you can drive away today and settle up down the road.

FAQ

What does a power steering rack do?

The power steering rack converts the motion from the steering wheel into the required force to turn your car’s wheels from left to right. Without a power steering rack, it would be near impossible to direct your car.

Rack and pinion steering vs power steering

While these systems both assist with steering, rack and pinion steering converts the circular motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn a car's wheels, while power steering relies on energy from an electrical motor to get around corners smoothly.

Power steering can be used alongside rack and pinion. When connected to a power steering system, the rack is connected to a cylinder with a piston in the middle. When you turn the wheel, power steering fluid is supplied to one side of the piston which reduces the level of effort needed to turn the steering wheel.

Can you drive with a broken power steering rack?

It’s not recommended to drive with a broken power steering rack. Your steering will be faulty and unreliable, which can cause you to lose control of your car. For this reason, it’s well worth having your power steering inspected at the first sign of any trouble.
