What is a car window regulator?

Located inside each door of your car is the window regulator; the component that holds up the window and allows it to move up and down. There are two types of regulator: cable-operated, and a scissor-shaped device that uses gears to move. Most modern cars employ a cable-type regulator. The motor, which drives the regulator, may be included in the window assembly and need replacing along with the regulator, or it may be a separate component that can be replaced on its own.

What causes a window regulator to fail?

While most window regulators should last the lifespan of the vehicle, there are a few factors that can cause the cable to become frayed or even snap. The biggest impact comes from overuse (repeatedly moving the window up and down, causing overheating) and extreme weather, particularly cold and freezing temperatures.

Signs that your window regulator is failing can include:

  • Hearing the motor running, but the window doesn’t move
  • The window moves slowly, becomes stuck, or doesn’t close fully
  • There is a peculiar noise when the window moves
  • The window falls down inside the door
  • The window is crooked in the door

Window not working as it should? Give your local mycar a call and we’ll ask some questions to get an idea of what’s going on. From there, we can book a time that’s convenient for you to bring your car into the shop.

To get started on diagnosing the problem, we’ll need to remove the covers from the door so as to access the window regulator assembly. If the regulator is damaged or broken, we then remove it and install a new one, before piecing everything back together again. The process will generally take about four hours, as care is needed to avoid damaging parts or breaking the glass.

How much does it cost to fix a regulator for a window?

On average, you can expect a window regulator repair cost to come in around $300-450, depending on the make and model of your car and its type of regulator. When booking in for a regulator replacement, we’ll give you a quote upfront so there’s no nasty surprises.

To make things easier at the till, we offer Zip Pay and Afterpay alongside traditional payment methods like cash and card. Cover the bill upfront, then pay it off over time with manageable instalments.

How do you know if it's the window regulator or the motor?

If the window motor is behind your winding problems, you’ll probably find that the window simply doesn’t move, no matter how long you press the button. There is some overlap between window motor and regulator problems, so for accurate diagnosis and expert repair, book in to see your local mycar mechanic.
