How do I know if I need to change oil in my Toyota Corolla?

Seeing the ‘check engine’ light come on on your Toyota Corolla's dashboard is usually the first sign that you're due for an oil change.

Other signs include:

  • Engine noises: Knocking or clunking sounds can indicate friction between moving parts due to poor lubrication
  • Oil colour and smell: Dark oil or a sharp burning smell could point to oil leakage
  • Low engine oil: Can result in the engine overheating and reduced fuel economy
  • Smoke coming out of the exhaust: May cause oil leaks and broken engine parts, which can severely damage your vehicle.

If you notice one or more of these signs, then it might be time to head to your nearest mycar store to have the oil replaced in your Toyota Corolla.

What happens when I get an oil change for Toyota Corolla at mycar?

An oil change on a Toyota Corolla will generally take around 20-45 minutes, whether it’s done on its own, or as part of a basic or logbook service.

All it takes is a few simple steps:

1. First, your expert mechanic will run the car for a few minutes to warm up oil, then lift it up to take a look underneath.

2. They’ll loosen and remove the sump plug, waiting 5-10 minutes for oil to drain into the pan.

3. They’ll check the plug and washer and put them back into place, tightened with a hex socket.

4. The old oil filter is then removed, and the new filter installed. Premium oil will then be refilled to the correct level.

5. If things are good, they’ll turn the car off after 30 seconds and check around the sump plug and filters for any leaks.

6. Finally, they’ll clean and check the dipstick, making sure that the oil is full.

How many litres of oil does a Toyota Corolla hold?

The oil capacity for a Toyota Corolla will vary depending on the year and model. Years up to and including 2017 will require 4.2 litres of oil with a filter change and 3.9 litres without, though it’s recommended that you change your oil filter with each scheduled oil change.

How often does a Toyota Corolla need an oil change?

How often to change oil in a Toyota Corolla will depend on the year and model, as well as transmission type.

A Toyota Corolla synthetic oil change interval can last for up to 12 months (or 10,000-15,000 km, whichever comes first) before needing to schedule an appointment, lasting longer than conventional mineral car’s oil. A Toyota Corolla gear oil change interval can last for up to 48,000-80,000 km, so it doesn't need to be changed as often as engine oil.

However we recommend you have your Toyota Corolla's engine oil changed at least once a year to keep your car in good condition.

What kind of oil does a Toyota Corolla take?

A Toyota Corolla oil change type requires OW-20 full synthetic oil for models dated 2009 and later and 5W-30 full synthetic oil for models dated 2008 and earlier.

Numbers before the 'W' in the oil viscosity rating refer to how well oil will perform at low temperatures - the lower the number, the more easily oil will flow in cold weather, making it much easier to start your engine. Numbers after the 'W' refer to how well oil will perform at high temperatures.

The right oil for a Toyota Corolla gearbox oil change, meanwhile, will vary between models, as well as transmission type. 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil is usually recommended for manual transmissions, while the automatic transmission in a Toyota Corolla uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF) instead of gear oil.

Performing a Toyota Corolla gearbox oil change every 48,000-80,000 km will ensure smoother shifting between gears and better lubrication between transmission parts.
