Everything you need to know about highway tyres

Highway tyres are exactly what their name suggests: tyres for everyday, suburban and highway driving. Although they have the same powers as standard car tyres, most 4WDs are now fitted with these rubber wonders. They provide enough grip to handle soft dirt well but generally prefer urban roads and highways.

The tread on highway tyres is a little tighter than your average tyre, which leads to lower noise levels while travelling. The sidewalls in highway tyres are also thinner compared to other terrain tyres. On sealed roads, they create a quieter, smoother and more comfortable ride while improving highway speed durability and road handling.

Like regular tyres, you should replace highway tyres when the tread is less than 1.55mm deep or is showing signs of damage or ageing.

Is highway tyre pressure the same as standard tyre pressure?

Considering highway tyres are best suited to highway driving and sealed roads, the recommended tyre pressure is anywhere between 32 – 35 PSI, like regular car tyres. You may find that with highway tyres you need to check and adjust the pressure a little more regularly due to the long driving distances. Keeping them inflated at the right pressure will guarantee the comfortable and quiet trip that highway tyres are known for.

However, this can change depending on the recommendation from the tyre manufacturer with the specific tyre in mind. To find the optimal tyre pressure for your tyres, check either the owner’s manual or the placard which is normally located on the driver’s door.

All terrain vs highway tyres?

The choice between all terrain and highway tyres comes down to you, your driving style and your weekend plans.

If you spend most of your time commuting on highways, then highway tyres are your best bet. They will offer you a comfortable, smoother and quieter ride. However, if you want to take your car off-road, highway tyres won’t provide the same levels of puncture resistance as all terrain tyres.

All terrain tyres are perfect for off-road weekend adventures with rougher terrain and uneven surfaces. All terrain tyres aren’t as quiet or comfortable as highway tyres on sealed roads, but they can handle those rougher conditions.
