The oil pump is the heart of your car’s engine. It pumps in lubricant and supplies consistent pressure to keep all the moving parts of your engine running smoothly. It’s a heavy-duty part that usually lasts a fair while. However, with lots of wear and tear it can fail over time, spelling trouble for other parts of your engine.

If you think your car oil pump might be on its way out, mycar can replace it before it seizes up and ruins your day, as well as your engine!

What does an oil pump do?

You’ve probably topped up your oil from time to time (or had it topped up during your regular service). The oil pump is what sucks that oil up and sends it around your engine, lubricating all the various parts and keeping them cool. Without the oil pump, all those moving parts in your engine would grind together, causing significant friction and erosion.

To work, the gears inside the pump rotate to pull oil up from the sump - also known as the oil pan or reservoir - and send it through an oil filter which cleans it of any debris, like dirt or metal shavings. From there, the oil then travels around the engine, lubricating parts like the rotating bearings, sliding pistons and camshafts, before it ends up back in the sump to start the process all over again.

It’s an essential part of your engine and without it you’d quickly be in a lot of strife!

What happens in an oil pump replacement?

If it is a case of a replacement, we’ll need to drain the oil and dismantle the sump, remove the pump, and refit the replacement. Our team of mechanics will also replace the oil and test your vehicle to make sure everything’s working properly. Plus, with our workmanship guarantee you’re assured extra peace of mind long after you leave the garage.

If your oil pump is in need of replacement, it’s best to give your local mycar a call. Over the phone, we’ll ask you a few questions to give us a good idea of how extensive the problem is. Then, we’ll book you in at a time that suits where we can properly assess and repair the damage.

You’ll want to have a faulty oil pump replaced sooner rather than later, as it can impact your engine’s vital components, which means a much bigger job (and cost).

How much does an oil pump replacement cost?

The average cost of an oil pump replacement is around $800. However, it’s hard to give an exact figure as there’s many variables involved, and it can be quite a technical and labour-intensive job.

At mycar we’ll provide you with an upfront quote that itemises any costs involved like parts, labour, and additional repairs, so you won’t be left in the dark. That way it’s easy for you to see where your money’s going and make the right decision when it comes to your oil pump replacement. At mycar we offer flexible payment options like Zip Pay and Afterpay, so you can get this essential replacement done and drive away with confidence.

The engine oil pump location

The oil pump sits in the oil pan where it sucks up the engine oil. This is located in the lower part of the engine, and sits below or beside the crankshaft. Depending on the vehicle, the location can change.

Symptoms of a bad oil pump

A bad oil pump has a few tell-tale signs it’s on its way out. Here’s what you need to look out for:

  • Oil pressure dropping - you’ll know this because the check engine or oil warning light will come on
  • Your engine is overheating
  • Your car is making grinding noises

FAQ

What happens when your oil pump fails?

When your oil pump fails it’s unable to send oil around your engine, resulting in low oil pressure. This in turn can cause damage to various other components of your car’s engine.

A pump can fail from a build-up of debris due to infrequent oil changes, and become warped over time if your oil level is too low for too long.

Can you drive with a faulty oil pump?

We don’t recommend driving without an oil pump. Doing so will cause lasting damage to your engine. The oil pump is responsible for sending the oil around your whole engine, driving without it means significantly overheating it, as well as its moving parts will grind together and start to wear.
