FAQs

How long should a tire last?

Your tires should last three to five years, on average. The average person drives around 12,000km per year, and the average tire should last around 40,000km, depending on road conditions, tire maintenance, driving style and other factors.

How often should tires be replaced?

Every three to five years (at maximum). If you’re not sure how old your tires are—check the date of manufacture stamped in your tire’s sidewall.

Did you know your tires wear even when they’re not being used? The compounds in the tire begin to break down after around five years, which can be dangerous if not addressed. Make sure to switch them out!

How do I know if I need new tires?

The obvious sign is the tread getting too thin or balding (but you don’t want to get to that point!). Other signs can include:

  • Damage to the tires, like a damaged sidewall
  • It has a hole larger than 6mm in diameter
  • The bead (the edge of the tire that sits on the wheel) is deformed or damaged

If you notice any of the above, get in touch with your local mycar for help.

How long can you drive without changing tires?

A standard tire should last between three and five years, any longer and you’re at risk of:

  • Losing road grip,
  • Burst tires,
  • Difficulty braking effectively,
  • Having less control of the car.

Using a spare tire? These are meant to you to the mechanic in times of need, and should not be driven on like a regular tire. Make sure you swap it out for a tire as recommended by your local mycar mechanic.
