Time for an oil change?

Car dashboard

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car—it’s what helps keep all those systems free from friction so those cogs, pistons and bearings can go and go (and go!). When oil is old or has gotten low, it can’t do its job properly, which can wreak havoc on your engine. Not only that, any dirt or grit that it’s picked up is going to slowly wear down its moving parts, meaning the longer it’s left, the more potential for damage.

No one likes poor fuel efficiency or engine failure, so if you want your car to be a smooth operator, regular oil change services are essential. At mycar, we’ll change your oil and filters as part of your regular car service, but if you are worried about the state of your car’s oil, we can help any time!

How customers feel about our Car Servicing

How do you know your car needs an oil change?

If you’re wondering how often oil changes are needed, it depends how often you drive, as well as whether you’re towing any loads or doing a lot of stop-start driving. Generally, it ranges between 5000 km and 10000 km, or every 6 months.

Here are some signs that’ll help you gauge when to change oil in your car:

  • The check engine light or oil light is on
  • Dark, murky oil (it should be translucent light gold)
  • Smoke from your exhaust pipe
  • Knocking or noises coming from the engine. This means the oil isn’t lubricating properly and that parts aren’t moving smoothly. Get to a mechanic ASAP!

What is the oil change process?

At mycar, our friendly mechanics can get your oil change done quickly and efficiently. While different cars may require slightly different approaches, an oil change will generally follow the same process. Here are the oil change steps you can expect from our team:

1. We’ll run your car for a few minutes to warm up the oil

2. Your vehicle will be lifted using our workshop equipment so our team can easily access underneath

3. Using a pan to catch the oil, we’ll loosen and remove the sump plug with a hex socket and wait 5-10 minutes for the oil to drain

4. When the flow has stopped, the plug and washer are put back on, making sure they’re in good condition and tightening them with the hex socket.

5. The old oil filter is carefully removed. It’s full of oil so it’s carefully poured it into the pan

6. Your new filter is installed

7. We’ll refill the oil to the correct level

8. If all looks good, we’ll turn the car off after 30 seconds and check the sump plug and around the filter for leaks.

9. Lastly, we’ll clean and check the dipstick to make sure the oil is full, and if so you’re ready to rock and roll!

How long does an oil change take?

An oil change will generally take 20-45 minutes. At mycar, our mechanics do these all the time, whether as an individual service, or as part of a basic or logbook service.

What does an oil change cost?

So how much for an oil change?

When budgeting for the cost of an oil change, you should expect to pay between $150-$200. This cost can fluctuate, depending on the condition of the car, how old the oil is, what type of oil is required and if other additional services a required.

At mycar we offer flexible payment solutions like Afterpay and Zip Pay, so you don’t have to risk your engine by putting off regular oil changes. It’s also part of our Essential Service.

FAQs

Why change oil every 6 months?

It’s important to change your oil every six months to prevent issues such as overheating, poor fuel economy, or even engine damage. If you leave your oil change too long, your engine may even lock up and need to be replaced—and that’s a costly exercise!

Regular oil and filter changes ensure that everything is properly oiled and working as it should.

What happens if you don’t change your oil?

When left unchanged for long periods of time, your car oil can begin to solidify and turn into sludge. This makes it very difficult to get around your car’s engine and keep things running! When this happens, your engine parts will be starved of oil, causing damage, wear and an overproduction of heat. If left unchanged, it will lead to catastrophic engine damage.

How long can I go without an oil change?

A regular car can go for generally 8,000 - 12,000km without an oil change. So if you’ve skipped a scheduled service, you’ll probably be fine. However any longer than that and you could be putting your engine and car components at risk. Oil degrades more under certain conditions, so if you do a lot of short drives, have an older car, or tow heavy loads, it’s best to keep up with scheduled changes.
